Production plants often use highly flammable technologies that represent high fire risks for the work area and its working environment. 

 Manufacturing processes may release small by-products and pollutants into the air that can only be collected and filtered through the use of industrial exhaust technologies. Depending on the technology used, such contaminated air may have a tendency to ignite within the exhaust system, which must therefore be protected for fire safety reasons. 

In the event of a fire in a closed system, it must be possible to immediately start fire suppression, which in most cases starts automatically.
